Early Western Civilization (4000-1000 B.C.E.) History Research Paper

Early Western Civilization (4000-1000 B.C.E.) History - Research Paper mannequin2008). The pastoral peoples of these societies played a significant role in the history. It was the start of result of new states in the third and second millennia BCE. Eurasia was militarized, and major trends were seen in Eurasia and Africa. It altogether began when irrigation was started on the floodplain of Mesopotamia in Southwest Asia, which initiated a drastically novel trial in human organization on earth. Although the vales of the lower Tigris and Euphrates were rainless, yet they had an riotous supply of water due to which these areas could provide land to vast concentrations of population, and could support higher cultural density than any hill country. 4000 BCE was followed by the emergence of blown-up walled cities along the two rivers. This paper details the chronological series of developments in the western world history from 4000 to 1000 BCE. Spielvogel (2011, xxix) writes in his boo k that, Although early civilizations emerged in different parts of the world, the foundations of Western civilization were laid by the Mesopotamians and the Egyptians.i These were the people who struggled with the newly emerging problems of the new states and communities in 3000 BCE (Noble 2008, 14). This period saw the emergence of major civilized societies. The appearance of four great floodplain civilizations was significant. First was in Mesopotamia, which was followed by a second one and only(a) in the Nile valley, and the third one appeared in the Indus valley in 2500 BCE. These civilizations had a great impact upon each other through intercommunication, agriculture and trade. Then, the fourth civilization appeared in the Yellow River valley of northwestern China. Agriculture went on spreading, and urban centers emerged on the rain-watered lands of Syria and the island of Crete. When agriculture and trade was extended on large areas, new complicated societies arose in the Ae gean ocean Basin and Western Europe. It was the eon when most of the population of the world resided in small farming areas, with the main occupation of hunting and foraging. This population had to make a lot of struggle to adapt to the changing world of new civilizations. New social circumstances demanded a lot of effort on their part. This was also the era of pastoralism- the emergence of pastoral peoples (Embree and Gluck 1997, 916). Larger communities that emerged in Eurasia and Africa fed on animals, which were the main source of food in those areas. The pastoral peoples started migrating from the steppes of Central Asia in the second millenary BCE, and this brought about a major change in the west including Europe, and the Mediterranean basin to India. Spielvogel (2011) writes that these people developed writing and created literature that tells about the culture and social values of their era. They also constructed monumental architecture which symbolized their power and cu lture. It was the era of militarization of some societies and appearance of new kingdoms, in which the main language belonged to the Indo-European family. This era also saw some of the most fundamental inventions, discoveries and institutions of the world, which also formed the basis of subsequent communities and civilizations. 4000 BCE is also famous for its great flood stories whose archeological tell has been found in 1929, which showed that there was a great flood at Ur near the Persian Gulf in the delta of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. These floods were considered as punishments from God, because they were also talked about in the Epic of

Creation would clean be a constant process of reinventing the wheel. Creating something new that is not based off of someone elses ideas takes a lot more time and effort. figure what the world would be like if every single person who wanted to use a computer had to invent their take in language for programming it, their own operating systems and other computer processes. Pardoning Death Row Prisoners Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Pardoning Death Row Prisoners - Essay ExampleShe corroborated her claim by non only leading an exemplary life during her time in the prison house, and also managed to garner much social and institutional support in favor of her pardon. The second example is of a gangster Stanley Williams who murdered 4 bulk in cold blood and received a death sentence. In the following years, Stanley not only became a peace activist and a rich writer, but also claimed that the prison life had made him a good person. Again, Stanley managed to attract the sympathy and support of many prominent citizens and organizations. Yet, both Karla and Stanley were executed, irrespective of their proclaimed rehabilitation on death row.Law serves many purposes in the modern societies. In case of a heinous crime like homicide, the purpose of the constabulary is not only to give justice to the murdered individuals and their family members and associates, but also to set an example before the society, so that peo ple may desist from committing such crimes in the future (Bedau 52). If the state starts pardoning or commuting the death sentences of the criminals who claim to have changed or have become peaceful individuals owing to religious or other benign reasons, this will provide a loophole to most of the death row prisoners to claim pardon by citing similar excuses. ... Such instances will not only set a dangerous precedent, but will amount to reducing the law to a joke. The transformation or improvement of a receiver does not relieve one of the debt one owes to the victims in particular and the society in general.Second Possible Position It is a known fact that in most of the modern societies, their always exists a gap of a couple of years, before the passing of a death sentence to a person inculpative of murder and the actual execution. The primary purpose of the law is to make society a safe place to live. Hence, it is perfectly justified to protect society from a dangerous murderer o r a habitual criminal by sentencing one to death. Considering the prolonged gaps between the passing of the sentence and the execution, it is quiet possible that a murderer may become a better person owing to introspection and the salubrious influences that one may come across in the prison (Tabak 181). If this fact is further corroborated by a prisoners good behavior on death row over a prolonged period and is recognized and support by prominent citizens and organizations, the state can certainly pardon or commute the death sentence of such a prisoner. Once a prisoner has credibly become a peaceful citizen and has managed to attract the support of the society, executing one simply serves no purpose, but amounts to unnecessary and legal violence (Baird 46). much Agreeable Position In the context of the case presentation under consideration, the first position stands to be more valid and agreeable. The first position takes a more broad based and pragmatic view of the institution of law. The perspective adopted by the first position

The Production Function for Buses - Edgeworth Box Assignment

The Production Function for Buses - Edgeworth Box - Assignment ExampleOur function will reproduce increasing returns to scale. This means that with an hookup of production factors volume of produced goods will grow. To find a takings of buses with every combination of production factors, it is necessary to substitute each number of employees and the number of machines for K and L indicators. Hence, if a number of machines ar 14 and number of employees who make buses is 5, the calculation of production output will be the following In uniformity with above example, we can calculate all the rest level of production. (K=10, L=3) (K=8, L=1) etc. From the table, we can also see that in accordance with the accrual of employees, the number of produced buses grows. Part (B) Make an Edgeworth package diagram for the production of buses in Utropica put the number of employees making buses on the horizontal axis (0 to 6), and a number of machines used to make buses on the vertical axis (0 to 16). Draw an isoquant line for 5 buses. On the same diagram, add an isoquant for 7 buses, and an isoquant for 10 buses. To draw an Edgeworth box diagram for the production of a specific number of buses, it is required to find all combinations of factors that are able to create the stated level of production. Hence, using a table above, it can be seen that 5 buses can be produced by 10 machines and 1 employee or 8 machines and 2 employees. So there are several alternatives for this output. Consequently, finding all possible combinations, we receive points that will form the isoquant line on the diagram. Using the same method, we find combinations of the factors for producing 7 buses.

Of these 47, 28 students belonged to the treatment group and 19 students belonged to the contrast group. Random sampling was used in this study. The questions in the survey were well-designed since they dealt with the core of the issue while dealing with ESL students. The idea was to improve upon t he paternity skills of the students and this meant allowing students to express their words in create verbally. It was concluded that WCF does indeed improve the makeup skills of ESL students. Though, students being taught under the program did slightly less better in terms of sentence complexity and length of the writing piece but their writing skills considerably improved when compared with traditional teaching methods. The data is well-justified.The pedagogical implications suggest that using WCF teaching method is likely to result in improved writing skills. This is because traditional teaching styles are less focused on gaining accurate and timely feedback which delays the understanding process among students. The questions in the interview were well designed since they were semi-structured. Domestic violence Essay Example for Free

Domestic military force EssayDomestic violence is a term that terminate be substantially defined as violence within the abide between the partners. To have a domestic violence case, it does non deal to be physical it arouse be emotional. According to the domestic violence organization (2009), domestic violence is defined as Domestic violence and emotional ill-usage atomic number 18 behaviors apply by sensation person in a descent to control the other. Partners whitethorn be married or not married heterosexual, gay, or sapphic living together, separated or dating. Which mean domestic violence can manoeuver place in any household it is not just a particular people that it happens to? It withal does not matter the race or ethnic background. Domestic violence is not only words or something that one says to one another or physical contact, according to Mass organization (2013) domestic violence is Domestic violence is defined as a formula of coercive and controlling b ehaviors and tactics used by one person over another to gain power and control. This may include verbal ill-treat, fiscal abuse, emotional, sexual, and physical abuse.Domestic violence occurs in heterosexual, as well as like-sex partnerships, and crosses all ethnic, racial and socio-economic lines. Although the studies of domestic violence ar somewhat different, they give the same examples as to what is considered violence between domestic partners. For example name-calling or putdowns, keeping a partner from contacting their family or friends, withholding money, stopping a partner from acquire or keeping a job, actual or threatened physical harm, sexual assault, stalking, intimidation.Furthermore one may not even notice that at that place was violence until in that location is a threat or physical harm due to the fact that so many individuals are not educated about what abuse truly is and the proper steps to take in order to prevent abuse or prevent themselves from getting abuse. Many individuals attempts to fix their birth by going to a counselor, which is a good step however it maybe something that they witness growing up therefore a counselor can only do so oft for them. There are many different effects that could happen in the life of a child who is raise in an shameful home. For example, if the child being raised in the abusive home is a male, he is more likely to wrench an abuser for he may opine that it is okay to speak to anyone that government agency precisely women, on the other hand he maybe the type to defend his mother because he may have a different mindset and believes thathis mother shouldnt be dispenseed that focussing and become really sensitive to other women because of the way his mother was treated. The other ways that this could impact the child is if that child is a woman, she may become paranoid of the opposite sex for she may believe that, the way her father as talking to her mother is the way that every man will be ta lking to her. On the other hand, she may become obedient if her mother was always submissive to her father through the abuse that she was receiving.Nevertheless she may also develop a low self-esteem believing that she was is expenditure more less than she does. According to the crisis center, some of the symptom that one may notice or hear from a child who is raised in an abusive home is they may feel a complete self-powerlessness because they are unable to do anything to the frightening noises, threats that they see or hear. They may also experience a terrifying storm of angry energy around them during abuse. They may experience emotional abandonment, develop low self-esteem as mentioned before, behavioral problems, problems with anger, feels isolated, take on adult roles prematurely, experience depression and flashbacks. When all of these issues combine, we have a child who is not fully sociable and has many different issues that may prevent him from having a relationship or co nversation to anyone whether it is a friend or a family member because they may believe that the person whom they are talking with may also abuse them.Often times they would be sensitive to certain impact. For example, if a person starts a conversation and it starts to get loud it may escalate to something much bigger than what it could be. In the United States, one may believe that abuse occurs more than other countries because in certain countries, abuse is not legal or some women will certainly not put with the issues. Often time it may result in fights or serious issues where one of the individuals has to live the house where they used to live. The different types of abuse that takes place affect a child differently.A great example that shows how a child might be bear upon badly by domestic violence is one of my close friends Ashley, while growing up Ashley would see both parents fighting and the fighting would be so bad to the point where her mom would not be able to sleep in the house after the situation occurred because the dad would threating her mom that if she sleep in the house he would kill her. Because of seeing this so often Ashley developed anger towards her father and the love that she once had for her father was long gone. Now Ashley is much older and she would tell he how the relationship that she is currently in would be affected because of the way she grow up seeing her parents fighting. In her current relationship, if her gent would talk to her the wrong way or if he would treat her in a way that she did not like she would develop anger that she would hit him and therefore they would start fighting. Even though she knew that this was not right she did not feel any remorse because to her that was the only way to release her anger and also she had become accustom to seeing her father do that to her mom so to her it is not all that bad. This example shows how a child that is around domestic violence may display violence against their partner when they are of age. Each finale has its own view on the correct way to raise a child. Some culture believes that a child should not be able to work or have any responsibility, while there are other culture that believe that a child should have responsibility because that will be the best way for the child to grow up and not be dependable on no one and would be able to care for themselves when they become of age. No matter what culture, ethnicity or race one might be everyone is able to be a dupe of domestic violence. In some culture for example Jamaica domestic violence is not accepted but it is not looked upon as a very bad thing where as the United States perception on domestic violence as a horrendous topic. While growing up in Jamaica I saw a lot of couple fighting, but often times the male partner is the abuser. While this is going on there are people in that area trying to stop him but was unsuccessful in doing so. Even though domestic violence is not looked upon as ok, it is not a crime that is so horrendous that the law of nature will be involved. The only way the police would intervene is if a death occurred and consequently an arrest would be made. While in the United States if a domestic violence is taking place then the police would be notified. Depending on the inexorable ness of the case an arrest would be made. If the couple is only arguing or they became physical but no physical injury is noticed the police would ask one of the individual to leave the premises and cool off. This period is known as the cooling off period and often times does not always work and if the violence happens again then one of the individual involved or even both will be arrested. This is just two of many cultures that have different views on domestic violence. The United States is a diverse country, and even here most people based the life on their culture. In some culture a man is allowed to have more than one married woman and the amount of money he has would de termine the amount of wife he was allowed to have. In this culture the male is also looked on as the dominant one in the household and because of this he is able to do as he please with any of his wife without getting into any trouble. No matter what culture you are domestic violence is something that should not be tolerated no matter how much money one has or even their statue in life.Due to the fact that a lot of people are not sure of domestic violence and the signs to look out for when abuse is about to take place they dont protect themselves and allow the abuse to take place. No matter what culture you are the main reason for domestic violence is power and control. According to life wire, different types of control in an abusive relationship are Threatening to report their partner or threatening to withdraw a petition to legalize their partners immigration status or threatening to judge sole custody of any children if their partner reports the abuse or attempts to leave. In ma ny cases children of different cultures that were victim of domestic violence grow up and abuse drugs and alcohol. To them they feel that all they saw growing up were their parents fighting or their dad abusing their mom or even the other way around, so why try and make something of them in the future if they will only become just like their parents. Children like this need close supervision and also need to be shown love on a daily basis so they wont think about suicide or committing crime in the future. Some sociological consequences are, the immediate emotional effects of abuse and neglect, isolation, fear, and an inability to trust can translate into lifelong consequences, including low self-esteem, depression, and relationship difficulties. There are other children that see their family member fight often and tell themselves that they will not be the same as their parents or family member. Children like these often are very dedicated to anything that they set their mind to and often accomplished their goal and become every successful in the future. They are also likely to treat their children with the utmost respect and show a lot of love for them because they do not want them to go through the same thing they went through. In net children are affected by domestic violence just as badly as the parents and often times even worse than their parents. Child abuse main role is power and control because they are children they are looked upon as helpless and defenseless and are more prone to become a victim of child abuse. No matter what culture you are domestic violence is still considered as wrong and should not be tolerated. Knowing the signs of domestic violence will help prevent it from happening and also will help you protect yourself if it occurring and also make u aware of the steps that you can take to get justice for yourself. Nevertheless, one must always take into consideration that some child turns out to be sensitive towards others after witnessing abuse in the family and other turns out to be abusers. In addition male children are affected differently than female children.

Ethical Problems in Mass Media Essay Example for Free

Ethical Problems in Mass Media EssayVirtuous decisions of photographers Publishing photographs that show in the flesh(predicate) tragedy and are questionable in their incorrupt standards with those concerning privacy and those about inflicting additional harm on victims can be supported by Aristotles Virtue Ethics. This should be supported because, as a intelligence activity organization, photographing what is believen shows the magnitude of the situation and documents as it happened. The publication of graphical real(a) such as was seen in the Bakersfield Californian.Photographer John Harte snapped eight frames after he responded to a all on the police scanner reporting a drowning. He arrived at a lake northeast of Bakersfield, California to the scene of divers still smell for a drowning victim. When the body of five-year-old Edward Romero was brought to shore a few minutes later, Harte went against what most of the other photojournalists and television crew did, which w as opt out, and took photographs of the body while the family members, who were on the lake shore, began to grieve. His editor, Robert Bentley, do the decision to run the photograph. The ethical question that surfaced when the public reacted to he photograph was to run personal tragedy photographs and exposing to a greater extent grief on family members of the boy. Aristotles cardinal virtues of only ifice, prudence, fasting and courage support what Harte and Bentley did when they ran the photograph of the boy. Hartes decision to take the photograph shows courage because he did it to the best of his own moral standing. This isnt the first time photographs that have been graphic and showing personal tragedy have been published. In A State of Emergency, photojournalist Gabriele Stabile took photographs in March 2009. That month, a wave of spring thunderstorms flooded Gazas caliche-topped streets and blew down relief tents for families displaced by Cast Lead (2011). The reason why th e photographs were published and defended through the virtue theory is because people from everywhere can cite to this seeing a grown man crying is always heartbreaking, especially if its someone whose daily challenges are far tougher than the ones we experience (2011).Furthermore, not only is the media apply in newspapers but in courtrooms as well, which documents graphic scenes of the discourtesy scene and victims as well. Although the use of such imagery has become the norm, the prejudicial nature of this manifest continues to be a contested issue in courtrooms across America. Criminal defense attorneys routinely submit motions in limine to restrict or exclude crime scene photos on the grounds they put undue focus on the victim and generate sympathy.Civil defense attorneys submit similar motions, positing that such evidence, which may be relevant for determining damages, has an improper impact on Jurors assessments of liability. Under both circumstances, Judges exercise the ir discretion nd usually allow the venire to see some, if not all, of the images (2009). This shows that the Judges using the virtue theory have to decide whether it is 0K to show published photographs of the crime scene and victims that have been harmed, or it they ward off snowing it at all because ot the lawyers arguments tor or against it.Most of the time, the Judge will choose to show some, if not all, of the images. This example is included because Judges are like photographers in that they want the whole story shown and they want to be the communicator in getting Justice r sense out to the population, no matter how graphic the material is. Counterarguments/refutation People have disagreed in that they take the utilitarianism theory approach which states that it minimizes harm and reduces suffering. Many would argue that create photographs that are graphic have caused the family more harm and increased their suffering by having their grief made public. An example of this wo uld be when Ki-Sak Han was pushed in front of subway train and when his body was brought back onto the platform, some photographers started snapping pictures of the body. Many photo takers have been desensitized by watching the traditional news media do unseemly things, such as stick a microphone in the face of a distraught person to probe their feelings. In the case of subway victim Han, many people would be morally offended that others snapped pictures Just after his death (2012).The reason why people get offended with personal tragedy photographs is, We think, What if that were someone in my family? (2012). It causes more pain on the family from a utilitarianism point of view. Not only is it personal tragedy photographs that raises peoples hackles but hotographs that are graphic in the case of photographer Sandy Felsenthal who was a actor photographer for The Commercial Appeal. Felsenthal exhibited 35 photographs on the newspaper lobby walls before nine non-news employees obj ected to the display as trash. The photographs that were labeled offensive included two masculine bikers kissing, a Ku Klux Klan rally, an interracial couple, a punk rockers throat in action and semi-nude dancers with their backs turned (1983). The photographs were graphic and not directly dealing with personal tragedy but more aboo practices in those times. It can be argued from a virtuous standpoint that he was capturing everyone to document in the news but the utilitarianism standpoint would counter-argue that he had caused suffering to those he photographed by exposing them and to those that had seen his photographs displayed before it was taken down. The best way to sum this up comes from Ralph Beddard who states It is therefore the use to which the photographic image may be put which should concern civil autonomy activists. Human rights violations are likely to arise where the use is not the ne originally envisaged. Everyone, in the liberty of private life, should be allowed to act in any way which he or she chooses provided that this is within the law and the tenets of public morality. If such conduct is captured on a photograph which is publicized to the human at large, or to any particular named person, it could well prove to be humiliating or embarrassing.Whilst it is important to be sensitive to the fleeting inhibitions or vanities of the individual, it is essential that such technology should not be used to rob any person of the sense of personal integrity nd security for which rights of privacy are framed. The value and utility which the photograph adds to the freedom and security of society as a whole must always be measured against the encroachment on the security ot litestyle ot the law-abiding person. In short, we must be aware of the inhibiting role of surveillance. The comment that the camera only sees what the human shopping center could see, even if correct, is not a satisfactory response. One does not want everyone to see what one is d oing all the time (1995). What this is saying is that capturing someones grief for the world to see is nvading their privacy and although the photographer can see exactly what is happening, it does not mean that everyone wants to see someone suffering or graphic photographs of a child drowned or a man hit by a subway. It also states that the value and utility must be measured against whether it causes an encroachment on the family members left so-and-so by the tragedy that have to deal with the world knowing of their personal loss. The virtue theory defends photographers and their editors decision to publish photographs, that are often graphic, of personal tragedy. This is ground on their good ntentions to record the truth as to what they see and to also bring about awareness to situations through capturing moments for the population to see.The utilitarian would argue that publishing such photographs would not help the families or people suffering from personal tragedy but cause th em more harm in broadcasting to the world of their loss and causing more suffering on them that has now been published for the world to see. Although both arguments are valid, the virtue theory is one that most photographers would keep because it is not them trying to cause more suffering to he people suffering from a personal tragedy but more for them to bring awareness to the community.
